Open System Interconnection (OSI)
The OSI model was meant to help vendors create interoperable networking devices so that different networks could interact with each other. This model was developed by International Standardization Organization (ISO).
This reference model addresses all processes, which are required for effective communication. This model divides these processes in a logical grouping which are called layers. The communication system designed in this way is called Layered Architecture. This model is hierarchical. Advantages of using layered architecture are:
- Make multi vendor development possible through standardized network components
- Make the communication possible between various types of network hardware and software
- Prevents affects in one layer from changes in other layer
