TCP/IP basics
TCP/IP is not single protocol, but it is a protocol suit. This networking model has four layers. We can roughly compare this model with OSI model of networking.

Layers of TCP/IP model
The Application layer of TCP/IP model is equivalent to top three layers of OSI model. Whereas TCP/IP link layer is equivalent to the bottom two layers of OSI model. There are many TCP/IP protocols. Some of them are in regular use like FTP, TCP, IP, SMTP, HTTP, POP3, and NFS etc. Few of these are described hereunder:
