TCP/IP Link layer protocols

These protocols are generally associated with network technologies like ATM and Ethernet etc. The network packets are organized in 1s and 0s at this layer. These bits then are sent through the transmission media. This layer is also known as Network Access layer. Few of the network technologies are:

Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) : It allows the data transfer speed of 10 MBPS maximum.

Fast Ethernet (IEEE 802.3u) : It allows the data transfer speed of 100 MBPS maximum.

Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ae) : It allows the data transfer speed of 1000 MBPS maximum.

Point to point protocol : It was used with regular telephone modems, and provided a limited speed of 56 KBPS.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM): These are alternative for IP networks. These networks can provide a

data transfer rate of 155 MBPS or 622 MBPS.
