Disk quota

In a networked environment, many a times it becomes necessary to restrict users from consuming too much disk space, so that we can prevent the partitions, such as /boot or / (root) from becoming full. Without sufficient disk space for these directories, Linux system may crash. Disk quota is normally used by administrators to regulate the amount of space consumed by any particular user for his mails, FTP files or website files and many more.

The quota can be configured for individuals or for groups. It is so flexible that we can configure small quota for each user to handle his personal mails or reports etc, while for their projects to have more sizable quota (assumed that the projects have been given their own groups).

Quota, not only can be set to control the number of blocks consumed, but it also can be used to control number of inodes, which are data structures that keep the information about files in file system. Since inodes are used to keep file related information, therefore, they allow control over total number of files that can be created. Quota also allows us to monitor system usage pattern.

Note: To implement disk quota we must install quota RPM.
