Software RAID recovery

We can use mdadm -f command to simulate the drive failure. This command is useful when we want to test RAID. We can easily recover from a failed RAID. Just switch off the system, change the failed disk with good one. Construct the partition table on disk. This new disk can now be inserted into array with mdadm -amdadm -r command. command. For removing the failed disk from array we can use.

By default, the information about the failed disk is logged into /var/log/messages. We also can get the information about current state of software RAID through /proc/mdstat.

The output of following command shows a RAID 5 device /dev/md2, which is made up of /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1,and /dev/sdc1. Out of these, the device /dev/sdc1 has failed:

# cat /proc/mdstat

Personalities : [raid5]

md0 : active raid5 sdc1 [3] (F) sdb1 [1] sda1 [0]

If array is rebuilding, we can see the information about estimated time to reconstruct. We also can use command mdadm --detail to view the status of RAID array.

This was all about RAID.
