Managing Packages using RPM
RedHat Package Manager (RPM) provides us a standard way to arrange software that we need for different applications and utilities. All the software on Linux system is divided in RPM, which can be installed, removed and upgraded. RPM is an open system package management and available to every one for his use. It runs on any of the Linux or UNIX systems.
RPM makes installing, uninstalling, upgrading or upgrading the system a very easy task. It makes a database of all the installed packages. This makes it possible to invoke queries or verification on our system. It also provides a graphical interface to perform many RPM commands.
The RPM we install are in binary format, Red Hat provides source code for each package. Using rpmbuild command we can organize and build these packages in binary files so that any one can install. The same work can be performed with similar command, the tarball.
One of the advantages of RPM is that we can verify the integrity of packages and files etc. With correct rpm command we can identify the changed file. Red Hat Linux also keeps the latest RPM through the system called Rawhide. Instead, we can use up2date command to update the RPMs of our choice. At the time of upgrades, RPM handles configuration files very carefully so that we never lose our customizations. This we can never accomplish with our regular .tar.gz files.
