Capturing network data


  • Run the command ethereal&
  • Click Capture
  • Click Start, now the capture option window will be displayed
  • To see which interfaces are available, click on the down arrow aside interface box and select one.

If only one LAN card is installed, select eth0 to capture the packets available on this interface


  • We may choose other options for the type of data to be captured. These options can be as follows:

Limit each packet to

Filter

Use ring buffer

Capture packets in promiscuous mode

Capture files

Stop capture after X packets captured

Automatic scrolling in live capture

Enable MAC/network name resolution


  • Click OK. Ethereal starts capturing data

The capturing window shows the information of all the incoming and outgoing packets, across the network interface, since the capturing started


  • Click Stop, if it has not stopped automatically
  • Click Save As to save the captured data into a file
