Using Ethereal

Ethereal is a graphical tool, and is called as protocol analyzer or sniffer. It can capture and display the packets being sent from our network interface. With the use of filters we can monitor the activities of our network and trace the problems on it. Filters can be the direction of data, selection of protocol or selection of particular host.

This tool can track hundreds of packet types (i.e. different protocols). It can show specified field related to every protocol like source and destination addresses, different data sizes, port numbers and more.

Starting

To start ethereal tool, this package should be installed. Now just type the following command:
