Peer to Peer Networks:


As we know the operating systems are of two main types –


1) Client OS and

2) Server OS.


Client OS are those which can manage only single user at any point of time. Examples of these are: Windows XP, Windows Vista or Linux client etc.


Server OS are those which can manage multiple users at a time. These are also known as Network Operating System (NOS). Examples of these are: Windows 2003 server, Windows 2008 server, Enterprise Linux server or Novell server etc.


So, when all the computers of a network have same (i.e. client) types of operating systems on them, then this type of network is called Peer to Peer network.



Client-Server networks: When at least one computer of the network has server type of operating system on it, then this type of network is called client-server network.

Network configuration


We require network connection between computers so that the can communicate with each other. Connecting computers in our organization will save lot of time and money. Few benefits of connecting computers on LAN are:


  1. Saving time, by sending data at faster speed
  2. Saving money, by sharing network resources like disk space, CD/DVD drives or Printer etc.
  3. Achieving centralized administration, by keeping resources and management tools at central server.
  4. Achieving higher level of security, by keeping all the important scattered data at one place
  5. Getting internet and its related advantages, like emailing, chatting, e-business, and

e-commerce etc.


Types of networks


The networks can be defined as follows:


  1. Networks depending on operating system

a) Peer to Peer

b) Client-Server

a) PAN (Personal Area Network)

b) LAN (Local Area Network)

c) CAN (Campus Area Network)

d) MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

e) SAN (Storage Area Network)

f) WAN (Wide Area Network)
