Hub
In star topology, a hub is centrally used to connect the systems on the network. These are also known as repeaters or concentrators as they receive the signals, rebuild these signals and then retransmit it at its original strength. As they work with 1s and 0s of computer communication, these also work at The physical level of OSI model.
Switches
This is also used in star topology as hub. But the switch works more intelligently as it reduces network traffic by directing messages to the intended computers only. In this way the switch splits a large LAN into two or more different logical network segments. Since switches keep the database of hardware address on a LAN, they are said to work at layer 2 of the OSI model.
