Ring Topology


This topology is very rarely used. In this topology, the device called MSAU (Multi Station Access Unit) is used to connect the computers to form a ring. Computers that want to send the information on the network, wait for their turn. Only when they get the TOKEN, they send their data, if they have. This topology uses IBM token ring protocol.


Advantages of this topology are that all the nodes have equal chances of transmitting the data and growth of computers has least impact on performance.


Disadvantages are that if one node gets down then the entire network may go down. And Token may get lost or too many tokens get generated. Lastly it is difficult to add or delete nodes on the ring.
