Gateways

Gateways can connect different LANs using different protocol stacks. They work at application layer of OSI model.

Linux assumes that gateways and Routers are functionally equivalent. e.g., if our network is connected to an outside network using Ethernet card eth0 via a router, we can specify its connection to our LAN in ifcfg-eth0 file in /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices directory as our GATEWAY IP address.
