Basic hardware requirements:
If you want to install Enterprise Linux , install additional software, configure a graphical user interface (GUI) or setup a server then the minimum requirements will be as follows :
Type Minimum
CPU Pentium – class
For text mode install: 200 MHz Pentium class or better
For graphical mode: 400 MHz Pentium class II or better
RAM 64 MB: for workstations in text mode
128MB (192 MB recommended) for Graphical Workstations
Hard Disk 600 MB for custom minimum and 256 MB for swap. It can go up for other types of installations, like 6.9 GB for custom everything and 256 MB for swap.
New features:
• Linux kernel version 2.6.18
• Virtualization: This gives the VM more direct access to the hardware, which in turn gives improved I/O performance.
• The desktop: Besides including newer versions of common desktop applications like Evolution (2.12.3) for email, Firefox 3 for Web browsing and OpenOffice 2.3 for office work (which is a full featured MS Office style application suite), Red Hat has also added Suspend/Hibernate/Resume enhancements for laptops. Also, Red Hat has updated many of its graphic drivers.
• Security: This will enable developers to create drivers for cryptographic hardware devices.
• Clustering and storage: Red Hat Cluster Suite, which comes with the RHEL 5 Platform, now has a Resource Event Scripting Language. This will make it easier to write applications that will make the most of a clustered environment.
• Networking and IPv6: RHEL 5.2 now supports OpenSwan 5.2. This means users will be able to run IPv6 IPSec virtual private networks (VPNs).
• Iptables, the default firewall tool
• Apache 2.2.3 is now the standard Red Hat web server.
• Xfree86 supports for additional graphic adapters. It also has support for X resize & Rotate.
